Clam Digging with Rosie Cayou-James
May 11, 2024
1:00 - 3:00pm
Mud Bay Dock Road
Coast Salish cultural teacher Rosie Cayou-James is coming out to Lopez to dig clams with island kids and their families and you are invited to join us and help dig (and eat the luscious clam fritters and half-shell butters we'll be cooking). The tide will be all the way out at Mud Bay around 1pm, which is when Rosie and the Family Resource Center will be coming out with kids and families.

Parking at the end of Mud Bay Dock Road is limited, carpooling is encouraged, and we can help coordinate. If you do drive out, try to park at the end of the county maintained road and walk the final stretch.

Dress for mud and water. We'll start on the beach gathering clams, and then move on to cleaning, cooking, eating, and talking about clams as the tide comes in. We'll have a camp stove and plenty of butter, but feel free to bring food to share that goes well with clams.

Please remember to bring your own plates/bowls and utensils, and anything you need to dig and be comfortable outdoors (we will have extra digging tools and buckets). This is a Covid-safe event, if you are feeling unwell please take care of yourself and stay home.

Unless you are a Tribal member or under the age of 15, you need a current Washington State shellfish license to harvest clams. If the cost of one is a burden to you, get in touch, Kwiaht has a fund to help as part of our food security program.
