(2) More songs by Fats Waller (born May 21, 1904), counting down his top five most recorded hits, mostly written with lyricist Andy Razaf; (3) The second of our three birthdays in late May of our three clarinet “Kings of Swing,” three popular big band leaders, continuing this week with Artie Shaw, born May 23, 1910, and (4) Our fourth of a five-Friday series involving the five decade-career of Duke Ellington, who died 50 years ago oday (May 24, 1974) and was born 125 years ago. This week covers his years of peak popularity after his Newport rebirth in 1956, including global tours in the early 1960s and his first Sacred Concert.
