This Week: In this first of five Fridays in May, we honor the 125th anniversary of Duke Ellington’s birth (April 29, 1899), along with the 50th anniversary of his death (May 24, 1974), dividing his unparalleled 50-year band-leading career into five decades, the first comprising 1925 to 1935. Next up, we honor the highlights of lyricist Lorenz Hart (born May 2, 1895), primarily working with Richard Rodgers from 1925 to 1942. Another great lyricist, Sheldon Harnick (of Fiddler fame) was born a century ago this week, April 30, 1924, and he almost lived to 100, dying last June at 99. Then, we’ll continue our LP collection of the Bill Evans trio with his albums recorded from around the world in the early 1970s, including his Montreux (Swiss) concert in 1970 and his 1973 Tokyo Concert. In closing, we’ll sample several new CDs, including Seattle vibes player (and UW professor of Vibes) Tom Collier, singers Tierney Sutton and Lorraine Feather, and the Gordon Goodwin big band.
