Celebrate Earth Day at Hummel Lake!
Apr 2, 2024
Celebrate Earth Day with Kwiaht by helping continue the clearing and re-planting of the boat ramp at Hummel Lake! Information, hand tools and refreshments will be provided from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm on Monday afternoon, April 22. Everyone is welcome to lend a hand.

Under an agreement with the Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife (WDFW), Kwiaht is removing invasive weedy plants from the WDFW fishing-access at the corner of Center and Hummel Lake roads; replacing the kiosk and interpretive signs; making more of the shoreline accessible for fishing and bird watching; and stabilizing the recovered shoreline with native shrubs that enhance this habitat for birds, bats, and amphibians. Partners in this yearlong project include the Lopez Youth Conservation Corps and the Lopez Island History Museum. WDFW and neighboring landowners, including the San Juan County Land Bank, are participating in a longer term discussion of conserving water quality and wildlife.

Clearing away blackberry thickets, holly, English ivy and Scotch broom and hauling off trash has nearly been completed. Our priority now is planting hundreds of easily-managed and attractive native shrubs such as twinberries, serviceberries, wild gooseberries and native crabapples from slips sourced around the lake: plants that will feed wildlife from spring through summer without taking over the limited space available for birding, fishing, launching small watercraft, and enjoying the lakeview!

Watch for announcements of a community bass-fishing derby, a hands-on cattail weaving event, a bird walk, and a midsummer boating party at the lake coordinated by Kwiaht.
This Seven Spot Skimmer and a dozen other dragonfly species add to the little-recognized biodiversity of Hummel Lake.
