Kwiaht's Protest of the Monument RMP (Environment and Preservation)
Lopez Island
December 2, 2019

Kwiaht researchers have completed a review of the BLM's Proposed RMP for the San Juan Islands National Monument and drafted our protest. We are especially concerned that the Proposed RMP adopts the following strategies and actions:
• Constructing additional trails
• Permitting dispersed camping
• Restricting local food foraging
• Taking no specific actions to protect species that are locally rare
• Conducting extensive prescribed burning as a habitat management tool
• Applying herbicides to large areas of protected landscapes
• Planting species not previously found in the Monument

The full protest is attached.

SIGNIFICANT NOTE: Today we heard from the Protest Office: Because the protest period ends on a Sunday, they will allow protests to continue to arrive through ePlanning (https://go.usa.gov/xRphc) or be posted by snail mail
On:

MONDAY, DEC 23

FYI:The ePlanning site has been fussy and will not accept quotation marks in the title section. Probably other special characters as well may cause crashes.
Also today it reflected that it is down for Maintenance and that today is October 19. Do what you wish but I suggest that snail mail is a more reliable posting method.

Thank you for your patience and stewardship!

The changes you made are for the better from the earlier circulated version. Thank you, especially to those who edited the original version. You deleted the style math which doesn't represent reality. True BLM could spray every inch of all the acres.... Read all

The document I sent out to the Cloud House Google Group (a Google Group I manage) is the same as the one I posted here on Lopez Rocks. I encourage everyone to read the protest we posted and focus on the substantive issues that face our community in the.... Read all

Maybe try version sent by Cloud House?
Is on Kwiaht letterhead, has Kwiaht signature. Hoping no one is sending stuff out from you that isn't yours. The one we received is the one that has the huge number of lbs of herbicide that BLM will be.... Read all

I am completely baffled by Sally's comments. There have been no changes to our protest since it was posted and no other versions have been distributed. Lopez Rocks does not allow postings in Town Hall to be edited once they have been viewed.

The current version of Kwiaht's protest associated with the posting does not have a closing paragraph nor signature that an earlier version of the protest had. In that version, the protest stated it was submitted on behalf of Kwiaht, islanders and.... Read all

I'm honestly not sure where Sally got the impression that we were purporting to speak for the community and I would encourage folks to actually read the protest we drafted. We encourage everyone with interests in the Monument to protest if they can..... Read all

Thank you for sharing Kwiaht's protest.

I personally agree with some of the items you are protesting and disagree with others. Yet your protest often says you speak for islanders and our community. You speak for Kwiaht (you, Russell, your.... Read all
