This Orca Recovery Day, take action!
San Juan Island Conservation District, in partnership with San Juan County Land Bank, are joining conservation districts and partner organizations across the Pacific Northwest on October 16th for Orca Recovery Day. This day of action is aimed at improving conditions
for critically endangered Southern Resident Orca Whales.
After so many have looked to nature for space and renewal these past 18 months, the orcas swimming the Salish Sea offer hesitant hope to all who care about this iconic species. However, like many before them, their future depends on healthy habitat, a sustained food source of salmon, and community care and stewardship of
our watersheds where their food source comes from. The Conservation District and Conservation Land Bank are joining 45 other organizations across the Pacific Northwest to host activities enabling people to take action.
What: The Conservation District and Conservation Land Bank will be holding a volunteer planting event on Turtleback Mountain Preserve on Orcas Island and a virtual speaker series highlighting local orca, eelgrass, and salmon recovery efforts via Zoom.
Why: How does planting trees and listening to a speaker series help our Southern Resident orcas? Although this event seeks to raise awareness about this incredible endangered species, it also highlights the critical ecological connections between land and sea, and the importance of supporting natural systems.
When: Virtual Speaker series, Oct. 12th-14th, every evening at 5:30pm. Orca Recovery Day Planting event, Saturday, October 16, 2021. Click on the link below for event details and to register.
Who: This is a family-friendly event designed for anyone to volunteer and learn in their local community. State and county COVID-19 safety protocols are in place.
