Wave of Gratitude: Let's support our WSF Employees
Oct 14, 2021
Hello everyone,

A group of Lopez residents has started a campaign to show gratitude for our ferry workers this coming Tuesday, October 19th. This all originated on Facebook and has picked up quite a bit of momentum on Lopez, Orcas, and San Juan. The idea is to deliver goodies to all 3 boats in service as well as the Lopez and Anacortes terminals. Andrea and I have been in touch with folks from Orcas and San Juan and they are planning on taking care of their terminals. I have yet to find a contact on Shaw.

I will be posting a detailed plan tomorrow with a schedule and digital form for more folks to sign up for specific duties if they so wish. In the meantime, here is a letter that describes what we are up to written by Andrea and myself to give you more of an idea of what this group is trying to accomplish.

It's important to note that we do not want to cause too much of a scene by dropping the goodies off. That is why ALL items for donation need to be dropped off at the school between 5-6 on Monday, October 18th. There will be a team in the school cafeteria taking in the items. Thank you and enjoy.

Fellow Islanders,

We invite you to join us in participating in what we are calling the “Wave of Gratitude” this Tuesday, October 19th at your local ferry landing. On this day we are going to celebrate and show appreciation for all San Juan Island ferry staff who have been providing such an essential service to our communities, a service that saves lives and livelihoods during these most trying of times.

If you are able, please bake goodies, write thank you cards, or donate something nice for these everyday heroes. Lopez Island volunteers are planning on collecting all gifts the night before, evenly distributing and packaging them up so they are ready to be delivered to WSF staff on the 19th, and we would like to encourage you to organize in your communities in a similar fashion. We are intending to deliver these parcels to all four of the ferries that are currently in service, our local ferry landing, and the Anacortes terminal. Ferry staff have been notified of this and will allow goodies to be delivered as long as we follow the procedures they provide for us. Some islanders are making banners and signs in order to thank the ferries with unique island flair. If all the islands act in solidarity in this event we could have a truly amazing impact. Let’s come together and spread some island love to our ferry workers that work so hard to serve our friends, families, and neighbors!

Please feel free to reach out to Jesse Hammond @ pragmaticmusic@gmail.com, Andrea Huss @ andreamhuss@gmail.com, or your local Chamber of Commerce with any questions about this event. We hope to see you out there with us supporting our community!

With Love and much Gratitude,

Andrea and Jesse
