Living and working around ferry delays, cancellations in the San Juans
Sep 4, 2021
Salish Current, 9/3/21
This year's peak-season summer Washington State Ferries sailing schedule has been plagued by delayed and canceled sailings, some due to a shortage of crew and some to mechanical problems. For the long Labor Day weekend, things are not looking much brighter for the San Juan Islands runs. By Heather Spaulding

If you have been impacted by WSF ferry delays & cancellations, I suggest filling out the S.J.Co. Economic Development Council's (EDC) new survey found on the Lopezrocks Message Board page under Organizations.Info is being collected & then will be used to perhaps improve the situation. The survey takes about 5 minutes.

Definitely Jack. I refer to the economy only because so often that's the only argument many will listen to. Unfortunately our culture is built on throwing communities under the bus for the sake of the "economy", which is suicide in the long run of course. There is no strong economy without a thriving community. Folks seem to think things work ... Read All

It is not the economy we need to worry about but the health of the community and, most importantly, the LIFE (writ large)support system which makes it possible for us to live here and maybe even thrive. The way I see it too much focus on the economy is bringing new problems.

The 6:20 9-11-21 originating in Friday Harbor was canceled because of the shortage of crew. These crew apparently live on San Juan island and ended there shift bringing residents and visitors to the islands over the past days. These residents and visitors bought tickets in Anacortes and Are round Trip meaning that when you are ready to return to Anacortes t ... Read All

100% Mike. My comment was not a reply to yours just so you know. I hope your foot is doing better.

I'm thinking more from the perspective that our connection to the mainland is far more tenuous than people seem to be building their lifestyles around. In addition to what not just shopping local, ... Read All

Nathan,

Although I do some shopping on the mainland when I'm there for other reasons, this trip was for major foot surgery for my partner. Not available here.

Five hours in line when you are barely able to treat the pain does NOT lead to ... Read All

After getting stuck on the mainland for over 12 hours yesterday for a one hour dr. appt. in Anacortes to which I rode my bike, first time I'd been to America in a year or so, I am wondering if there might not be illnesses associated with these delays. I was cold and exhausted and have a cough the next day, wondering if I should get a Covid test to be s ... Read All

Perhaps OSHA enforcing the new vaccine mandates will help them realize that mask wearing is just a basic good health and safety precaution in the face of an epidemic that has killed more Americans than all the wars in the 20th century combined. They don't get to forgo their hearing protection or s ... Read All

Thank you. Anyone who has been following the news knows the problem is, once again, because of those who feel their elevated sense of 'freedoms' outweigh the health of the community. It might be well for us all to read the opening words of the US Constitution. Note the words before 'liber ... Read All

The county planning commission is now taking comments about reviewing the growth management plan. It is time the county took a serious look at the constant growth mantra which is slowly destroying our way of life.

This is a good time to remember we actually live on an Island. Our local economy would do well if we remembered that.

I just got home at two in the morning after having showed up for my reservation at seven in the evening. Friday night. Anacortes to Lopez. 9:00 p.m. boat. I had some conversations with the ferry workers that DID show up for work. It's obviously time to clear up a big misunderstanding and stop avoid ... Read All
