CENTURY LINK ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL.....
Feb 13, 2021
I have Centurylink for my land line phone and internet. As I drive around the island I see countless trees, branches, leaning over the phone lines along the roads....so many that could knock out my service especially during wind storms. Opalco trims and maintains the power lines.

Luck has been with me....so far. Is their business plan to abandon Lopez service and not service their lines? I am just outside the range of Rockisland, sadly. They collect my $97.76 each month.... Gary

Thanks John. Your experience sounds a lot like mine. Only right now LTE at best gets up to 3 or 4, often 1 or lower. I'm working with RockIsland (hoping to hear back from them) but in the meantime I ordered CenturyLink service and will try them in parallel to see what the best service for me will be. Reliability is very important.

As I noted in the other post along these lines

Sometimes it was as high as 30-40mbps, other times as low as less than 1. It mostly drop ... Read All

RI technicians have tried a lot of things, but it just keeps getting worse. I think it's mainly due to their system being overloaded.

Ann, have you had RockIsland out to check your antenna? If your service is consistently that slow there's something wrong. We get occasional blips of slow service but that's all it should be, occasional.

The LTE antennas need a good line of sight for a strong signal. If trees have grown up or the antenna gets knocked off direction your si ... Read All

Hi Ann, Just did your speed test link with my CL and got 9.8. I have my own equipment and a while back they told me if you get their equipment then you can get faster. We have been happy with CL.

Gary, what is your internet speed with CenturyLink DSL? My Rockisland LTE has gone down to 1Mbps or LESS and is just terrible. I'm considering going back to CL if it's better.

To test your speed, go to https://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

Thanks, Ann

There is little business incentive for CenturyLink to improve their service. They compete against fiber and LTE, and soon Starlink.
I would guess CL's model is not unlike AOL's was: milk the existing customer base as long as possible, and minimize investment to maximize profit.

We ended up getting fiber installed as I work from home. ... Read All
