the new 3-way stop signs in the village are for seniors to cross safely. If that is the reasoning, I wonder if there was a study to see where seniors actually cross the road?
I go to the post office almost every day, and my experience is that seniors daily cross from the Hamlet to the post office, including today.
It seems more practical to have a cross walk and yield signs where seniors are in the habit of crossing.
Just a thought from someone who doesn't know the whole story.

28 new homes? That should be a new message thread. As to the sign, look in front of Paper Scissors across from Holly B's. Big yellow pedestrian crossing sign. There is a lot more foot traffic there than in front of LVM. Same type of signage would be.... Read all

Hi John, many people have inquired lately with Lopez Community Land Trust about the 28 homes. We are not developing the homes. There is a notice posted on the tree near the entrance and you can find the permit number there. The land use table allows for.... Read all

The plot thickens. I had not heard about the 28 homes--homes? condos? apartments? Eeesh. We could use some low income housing, but market rate? Who is the developer behind this? What's the zoning there? Is there such a thing as a free lunch?

If you are referring to the 28 new homes slated for development behind the new LIFRC building, I believe those are all market rate homes planned by a Seattle area developer.

In reference to the three-way stop.

It is my understanding that the three-way stop will become a four way stop, when the 20+ low income homes are constructed to the north of the market and east of the Community resource center. So while the 3.... Read all

From reading through the comments, it sounds like the community's specs for this project would be: (1) protect the seniors crossing the road to the post office; and (2) do it without any visible alterations to the road.

Do I have that about.... Read all

Personally, I just don't understand the three-way stop signs that are being installed on Lopez. Where did this come from? I have not seen this elsewhere..

How about hinging the stop signs. There could be a button on a post that someone would press when they wanted to cross. The signs would then pop up out of the grass, and speeding cars would come screeching to a halt.

Seriously, how about hiring a.... Read all

Many towns install "traffic calming" devices (that's what they call them in England)...usually road narrowing style curbs, or speed "bumps"...these really seem to work wherever they have been installed.

I strongly feel like the new stop signs in town are SO not necessary, and that they will only cause more issues. Is it really necessary? It is hard to picture needing them for more than a few weeks of the year. Especially now with the new 20 mile per hour.... Read all

I support the proposal of a pedestrian overpass. That would provide the seniors and others with even more exercise than just the detour.

But seriously, the real issue here is that these three stop signs are godawfully ugly - I nearly fell off my.... Read all

It would not be expensive to do both - leave the stop sign where it is (it does slow traffic, after all) and add a crosswalk where the seniors and others like to cross in front of the post office.

Possibly the best solution would be helipads. There's room for one in the grassy central area of the Hamlet, and another could be put in the lot behind the post office. Seniors simply place a call for transport.

No, probably too expensive. A.... Read all

I agree with the placement to be changed to across from the Hamlet to PO. The main reason to cross the road at that point is the PO. Also, why a stop sign? The frequency of crossings seems very low. How about a well marked pedestrian crossing with yield.... Read all

Consider this: maybe the three way stop just slows us all down enough so that seniors can jaywalk! Lopezians are a helpful lot and seniors, like the rest of us still like to break a few rules. I chuckle every time I pull up to the stop sign on my bike,.... Read all

Thanks Dan,

My thoughts exactly...but remember the seniors will have to reverse this walk (backwards and round about) to return to the Hamlet, not very likely, I think.

The placement of the new signs seems rather odd to me. I assume a study was done as to where (and why) to place them there, but I, too, see people crossing from the Hamlet over to the post office.
