I received my property tax bill and was shocked to find that it went up 30 percent over last year. Are others in this same predicament? What percentage has other peoples property tax increased?

While the McCleary decision raises taxes collected by the state for education, on the whole the McCleary decision doesn't help Lopez School. Those funds are going to fund other schools in the state.

Yes, we got a double whammy this year! Not only was the hospital district along with the increase for state school taxes implemented but we on Lopez had a reassessment by the county for our property values. Our property value increased 20% and as Rochelle.... Read all

Our tax increased 33% which was a real shock as no capital improvements were made in 2017. The county is taxing residents into selling.

I am hearing from many people that their valuations went up significantly this year: 30% to 40% seems typical. Valuations for the land went down slightly, and values for improvements went way, WAY up.

It seems predatory to raise valuations this.... Read all

Our tax bill went up 48%, which is almost unmanageable. Much of this was the result of a huge valuation increase (I don't have the exact number available right now)Unless we plan to sell our house the increase in value is of no use to us. We.... Read all

Kevin, if you do not like the property tax in San Juan County then you should register to vote here. I have been to many meetings for one thing or the other where it is said that a property tax increase will ”stick it to” people who have property.... Read all

Our property tax increased approximately 33 percent--why I don't know seems they need more money for something. In any event if this keeps up the county will be forcing some like myself to sell--maybe that's what they want. Who knows-- just.... Read all

Seems like everyone's property taxes went up for all the mentioned reasons on this blog. Some slick beaurocrat years ago had an idea to tax our property's land and buildings to generate dollars for the state and county. Unfortunately it never.... Read all

My question and concern about property tax is not just about the increase related to State School Tax, but all property tax that increased my tax bill. The new Hospital District tax was responsible for almost half of my tax increase. Property tax is a.... Read all

Hi Rob,
Thank you for your vigilance and I apologize if my post was in any way misleading. It would have been more accurate had I started my comment with: “The increase is partially due to…” I assumed that roughly 85% of the Lopez voters who.... Read all

Paul, you cautioned against spreading misinformation during the election for the hospital levy; perhaps we shouldn’t spread it now. While it’s true that a portion of the increase in property taxes for Lopez homeowners is due to the legislature’s.... Read all

The increase is due to the state legislature responding to a State Supreme Court ruling. This quote is from an article, link below: "The 2017-2019 spending plan adds $1.8 billion for K-12 public schools, part of a multi-billion hike over four years.... Read all

Typically, increases in assessed value, if done across-the-board for the whole county, should not raise your dollar taxes. This is because the county budget needs would still be shared by the same number of land owners. If the county budget increases year.... Read all

33%, so we are slightly in the lead (but would rather not be)!

It was a double whammy for us as the assessed value went up with 22% for reasons unknown and unexplained. The county has not answered our request for information about the basis of.... Read all
